1. What is tooth sensitivity?

Teeth feel throbbing pain and discomfort when exposed to external stimulating factors

Teeth sensitivity, also known as hypersensitivity, is a condition in which teeth feel throbbing, painfully sensitive when exposed to external stimulating factors. These factors often include:

  • Temperature: Foods/drinks that are too hot or too cold (ice cream, ice, hot tea).
  • Chemical: Foods that are sour (lemon, mango), sweet (candy, soft drinks).
  • Mechanical: Pressure when brushing teeth, using toothpicks, or even breathing cold air.

This phenomenon occurs when the outer enamel layer - which is the "armor" that protects the teeth – is abraded or damaged, exposing the inner layer of dentin. Dentin contains thousands of microscopic dentinal tubules that transmit these stimuli directly to the tooth pulp (where nerves are located), causing a feeling of sensitivity.

2. Common causes of tooth sensitivity

Understanding the cause is the first step to having an effective remedy.

Eating habits lead to tooth sensitivity

Erosion of tooth enamel and exposure of dentin

  • Brushing incorrectly:Using a toothbrush with bristles that is too hard, brushing teeth horizontally with too much force causes abrasion of tooth enamel, especially in the tooth neck area.
  • Foods containing acid:Regular consumption of carbonated drinks, sour fruit juices (orange, lemon), wine, soda, pickles... erodes tooth enamel.

Tooth decay

When bacteria attack and form cavities in tooth enamel and enter the dentin, the dentinal tubules will be exposed, transmitting stimulation that causes sensitivity. If left untreated, tooth decay can penetrate deep into the pulp, causing pulpitis and more intense pain.

Gum disease (gingivitis, periodontitis)

Inflamed, red, swollen, bleeding gums not only cause gum recession but also create conditions for bacteria to attack deeper, affecting the tooth structure and causing sensitivity.

Cracked or chipped teeth

Due to trauma, biting on hard objects or grinding teeth can cause tooth decay. Cracks and chips on the tooth surface. These cracks allow irritants to penetrate inside the tooth.

Eating habits

Consuming too much acidic foods such as carbonated soft drinks, sour fruits, or hot and cold spicy dishes can erode tooth enamel over time, causing the inner layer of dentin to be exposed and become sensitive. In addition, frequent snacking, especially sweets, if not properly cleaned can easily lead to tooth decay and gingivitis - factors that indirectly cause tooth sensitivity.

After dental procedures

In some cases, you may feel temporary sensitivity afterteeth whitening, fillings, scaling or porcelain crowns. This condition usually subsides and disappears after a few days. However, if the sensitivity persists, you need to notify your dentist immediately.

3. How does tooth sensitivity affect the quality of life?

Although tooth sensitivity is not life-threatening, it causes many annoyances and negative effects on daily life:

  • Discomfort when eating:The sharp pain when eating your favorite food makes you lose the joy of food and lose your appetite.
  • Psychological effects:Anxiety and stress when facing attacks. Sudden sensitivity.
  • Afraid to communicate:Some people may feel shy in communication if tooth sensitivity is accompanied by other dental problems.
  • Warning signs of disease:More importantly, tooth sensitivity can be a symptom of more serious oral diseases such as pulpitis or tooth abscess. If not treated promptly, these diseases can lead to tooth loss.

4. Effective solution to treat tooth sensitivity

To overcome tooth sensitivity, you can apply home care measures combined with professional intervention from a dentist. Depending on the cause and severity, solutions will vary.

4.1. Methods to reduce tooth sensitivity that can be done at home

Here are steps you can proactively take every day to control and soothe the feeling of tooth sensitivity:

- Use specialized products for sensitive teeth:

  • Toothpaste:Choose toothpaste specifically formulated for sensitive teeth, containing ingredients such as Potassium Nitrate, Stannous Fluoride, or Strontium Chloride. These substances work by blocking the path that transmits pain from the tooth surface to the nerve or blocking exposed dentinal tubules.
  • Mouthwash:You can use mouthwash containing Fluoride or desensitizing agents (alcohol-free) to enhance tooth enamel protection and reduce sensitivity.

- Improve oral hygiene techniques:

  • Brush teeth properly:Use a brush with soft bristles, round head. Brush your teeth gently vertically or in a circular motion, focusing on cleaning both tooth surfaces and gum lines. Absolutely avoid brushing horizontally or using too much force because it will erode tooth enamel and damage gums.
  • Clean between teeth:Use dental floss or water flosser at least once a day to remove plaque and leftover food in places that are hard to reach.
  • Change your toothbrush periodically:You should replace your toothbrush with a new one every 2-3 months of use or when the bristles show signs of fraying or wear.

- Adjust your diet drinking and habits:

  • Limit irritating foods:Minimize the consumption of foods and drinks that are too hot, too cold, sour or too sweet.
  • Drink plenty of filtered water:Helps clean the oral cavity and neutralize acids.
  • Avoid teeth grinding:If you have the habit of grinding your teeth, talk to your dentist about solutions (like wearing an anti-bruxism mouthguard).

- Use warm salt water:

  • Gargling with saline or diluted warm salt water (1 teaspoon of salt in 1 cup of warm water) 1-2 times a day can help clean the mouth, reduce mild gingivitis and temporarily soothe sensitivity.

- Use Fluoride gel (as prescribed):

  • In some cases, your dentist may advise you to use Fluoride gel at home to enhance tooth enamel remineralization.

4.2. Intensive tooth sensitivity treatment at Lac Viet Intech Dental Clinic

When home remedies do not bring the desired effect, or when the sensitivity becomes more severe, professional examination and intervention at the dentist is essential. Doctors will:

- Examine and accurately diagnose:

  • By doing a clinical examination, asking medical history and possibly taking X-rays, the dentist will determine the exact cause of the sensitivity (tooth decay, tooth erosion, receding gums, pulpitis, cracked teeth...).

- Treat the root cause:

  • Tooth filling:If the sensitivity is due to tooth decay or tooth neck erosion, the doctor will remove the damaged tooth tissue and Filled with cosmetic dental materials to protect the dentin and pulp.
  • Gum/periodontal disease treatment:Carry out scaling and deep cleaning of periodontal pockets to remove bacteria and plaque that cause inflammation, helping the gums become healthy again.
  • Tooth restoration:For cracked or large chipped teeth, porcelain crowns may be needed to fully protect the tooth structure from external stimuli.
  • Gum grafting:In cases of severe gum recession that exposes a lot of tooth roots, gum grafting surgery may be prescribed to cover the exposed roots, reduce sensitivity and improve aesthetics.
  • Root canal treatment:If the cause of sensitivity is due to irreversible inflammation of the tooth pulp, removing the inflamed pulp and filling the root canal system is the only treatment method to stop the pain and save the tooth.
